About Our Hospital

The Specialty Hospital of Washington at Hadley focuses on long-term intensive medical care and is licensed as a Long Term Acute Care Specialty Hospital (LTACH). Although the concept of Long-term Acute Care has been in existence throughout the nation for several years, SHW - Hadley is only the second hospital of this type to be established in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and is currently the only JCAHO Accredited LTACH in the District.

In 1945, Dr. Henry Hadley and his wife Anna (a registered nurse) purchased this six acre site in Anacostia to build a hospital. It opened in 1952 and in 1955 was dedicated as the Hadley Memorial Hospital in memory of Dr. Hadley's mother, Sarah Hadley. In 1958 he donated the facility to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. During its long history of providing excellent care to the residents of Anacostia, the Hospital was acquired by Doctor's Community Healthcare Corporation who changed its mission from that of a general Short Term Acute Care Hospital to one of a Long Term Acute Care Hospital. In November, 2006 the hospital was acquired by Specialty Hospitals of America who embarked on a massive program of renovation to the physical plant, upgrading of clinical equipment and programs and renamed The Specialty Hospital of Washington – Hadley.

SHW - Hadley is a full service hospital with 24 hour In-House Medical, Nursing and Respiratory Therapy coverage and newly renovated GI and surgical suites. We are in the process of planning and implementing outpatient services to better serve the local community. An additional unique benefit of our facility is our free and ample parking which makes patient visitation easy and convenient.
