WASHINGTON - April 25, 2007- Specialty Hospitals of America, LLC, (SHA), the largest provider of long term acute care hospital services in Washington, D.C., has appointed Irving B. Sawyers, Jr., to be the chief executive officer (CEO) for Specialty Hospitals of Washington – Hadley (SHW-Hadley). SHA acquired SHW-Hadley, previously known as Hadley Memorial Hospital, in late 2006 and is operating as a long term acute care (LTAC) hospital and skilled nursing facility (SNF).
“We will put Irving’s vast experience and exceptional leadership skills to good use as we continue to develop SHW – Hadley,” said Susan Bailey, SHA’s vice president for the Mid-Atlantic Group.
Mr. Sawyers has more than 25 years of experience in hospital administration, including serving as CEO of LTAC, behavioral and general acute care hospitals five states and in Saudi Arabia. Most recently he was the CEO of the Specialty Hospital of New Orleans, Inc., where he had to manage the Katrina-related relocation of the facility. In addition he is a management consultant to businesses that operate and invest in the healthcare industry.
Eric F. Rieseberg, chairman of Specialty Hospitals of America, stated, “SHA is committed to a highly targeted model of healthcare that produces tangible benefits to patients, staff and the medical community. Irving has demonstrated that he can execute our business model and we are pleased to have him join us to lead SHW-Hadley.”
The combined success of SHW-Hadley and its downtown counterpart, SHW-Capitol Hill, in becoming the District’s largest provider of LTAC services is attributed to the company’s overall commitment to be a Focused Center of Medical Excellence (FCME) in the LTAC field. The FCME is a nationally recognized business model introduced by Dr. Regina Herzlinger, Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Medical School, as a way to encourage and enable doctors and staff to concentrate on and develop extraordinary expertise in specialty areas which, in turn, leads to improved patient care and fiscal stability. SHA applies FCME standards to LTAC hospitals, a specialized category of healthcare facilities that focus on caring for patients with medically complex needs that require a high level of nursing and specialized medical technology.
SHA is headquartered in Portsmouth, N.H.; the two Washington, D.C. hospitals are SHW-Capitol Hill, at 700 Constitution Avenue, NE, and SHW-Hadley, which is located at 4601 M.L. King Avenue, SE.
